PADDLECRAFT ADVENTURES
The island—itself facing other islands on almost every side—has some of the best-protected coastline in Alaska.
Numerous islands and saltwater waterways make paddling a top pick for adventurers. Canoers can paddle on numerous beautiful inland lakes that teem with wildlife. Sarkar Lake Canoe Route and Honker Divide Canoe/Kayak route are ideal for paddling excursions. Local vendors rent paddlecraft and camping gear.

Salmon are our most celebrated fish, but anglers’ targets range widely, from halibut hundreds of feet down in ocean depths to trout in high-mountain lakes.

ALPINE ADVENTURES
Robust populations of deer and bears provide island-wide opportunities for guided and DIY hunts in many terrains.
Prince of Wales Island is a world-class hunting destination, known for trophy Sitka black-tailed deer, large black bears and outstanding waterfowl. Deer season runs August through December. Black bear season is Sept 1 to June 30. Waterfowl hunting runs Sept 16 to Dec 31.

Wilderness
ADVENTURES
Wild land is nearby, all over POW, and true wilderness is just beyond: Karta River Wilderness Area is in the east center of the island and South Prince of Wales Wilderness is on the extreme south end.
Prince of Wales Island is unique in Southeast Alaska for its extensive system of paved and backcountry roads. Hundreds of miles of logging roads have been converted to trails by the Forest Service and are legal for ATVs. Five ATV maps are available from the Forest Service, the Prince of Wales Chamber of Commerce and local vendors. Spectacular wild country and mountain vistas are accessible on remote roads. Bring your own ATVs or rent a fourwheeler and trailer from a local vendor.
